Magnesium oxide board vs sandwich panel: two roles, one material family

Buyers confuse the board and the sandwich panel more often than any other distinction on this site, because the same material name appears in both roles. This page separates the roles; the standalone board's specifications are stated in the section below, as the product page lists them, and the same table appears on the magnesium oxide board page.

Role one: the board layer and core inside a sandwich panel

Inside a sandwich panel, a glass-magnesium board serves as a layer or a core component. The handmade MgO rock wool panel's layer sequence shows the role clearly: an upper fire-resistant glass-magnesium board, a fire-resistant glass-magnesium keel, and a lower fire-resistant glass-magnesium board frame the rock wool filling, between steel faces. In that role, the board is a component, and the panel's specification — width, thickness, joint, and selling points — belongs to the panel, not to the board layer alone.

The machine-made hybrid shows the other component role: a hollow glass-magnesium board filled with rock wool, as a core combination inside a tongue-and-groove panel. Again, the panel's specification belongs to the panel. A buyer who asks for the board layer's thickness inside a panel is asking a different question from a buyer who asks for a standalone board, and the inquiry should state which question is being asked.

Role two: the standalone raw board

As a standalone product, the hollow glass-magnesium board is the only independent board product on this site. Its material composition, as listed, is magnesium oxide, glass-fibre mesh, perlite, and non-toxic additives, with a hollow core structure that keeps the board light. Lairun lists its uses as cleanrooms, wall partitions, ceilings, floor bases, and prefabricated buildings.

The standalone board's specifications, as the product page lists them, are stated in the table below; the same table appears on the magnesium oxide board page.

How to choose between the roles

Choose the standalone board when the project needs a board: a board product, cut and fixed as a board, for one of the listed uses. Choose a sandwich panel when the project needs a composite panel: face sheets, core, and joint, for a cleanroom wall or ceiling, with the panel's listed width, thickness, and joint. If the project needs both — boards in one place and panels in another — state both, separately, in the inquiry, with separate confirmations for each.
